Area Information

Craig, the seat of Moffat County, is the economic hub of northwest Colorado. Our town is rich in recreation, natural resources and the lore of the Old West. Craig is centrally located between Denver and Salt Lake City and is served by U.S. Highway 40 and State Highway 13. There's much more to explore in Craig and Moffat County. Other towns on the same site predated the formation of Craig, including Windsor and Yampa. By 1878, the area consisted mostly of numerous open ranches. Craig became the county seat when Moffat County was created out of the western portion of Routt County on February 27, 1911. Denver, Northwestern & Pacific, had attempted to build a line running from Denver to Salt Lake City. In 1913, a reorganized version of the railroad, the Denver & Salt Lake, reached Craig.

It's mere minutes to Elkhead Reservoir, a favorite destination for boating, water-skiing, swimming and picnicking. Fishing is also great with abundant quantities. Hunters have been drawn to Moffat County for over 200 years. Loudy Simpson Park located along the Yampa River. Provides baseball and softball diamonds, an enclosed ice skating rink, picnic facilities, cross country ski trails, a playground, hiking trails, fishing on the river and a canoe/raft launch area. Visit Yampa Valley Golf Course and you'll find 18 holes to play as well as a fine restaurant and even a few resident bald eagles. The Moffat County Fair offers everyone the opportunity to enjoy live entertainment, dancing, games, livestock shows and more.
